An
invitation from the Goethe-Institut and Deutsches Architekturmuseum

“City
of Future - Making Heimat”
is the name of a project initiated jointly by the Goethe-Institut and
Deutsches Architekturmuesum.
In
the cities of Central and Eastern Europe, the presence of a kind
of countervailing urban development is often clear to see. While
historical city centers develop into attractive areas to live, full
of urban diversity, in marginal areas – often due to their loss of
function – basic public services and leisure facilities and thus
opportunities for social interaction fall by the wayside.
This
project aims to set an example in the development of small-scale
strategies to counteract such trends and work towards ecological and
socially sustainable urban regeneration. It aims to analyze specific
functional problems of public spaces, whether in city districts or
peripheral areas, and subsequently develop an appropriate course of
action. This could be the systematic revitalization or conversion of
designated areas, the transformation of former wasteland into a new
cityscape or a site-specific urban intervention.
These
efforts aim to create a specific public space that also allows for
diverse usage and ultimately constitutes a “heimat”,
a home, for residents. It is for this reason that the project also
seeks to support residents and citizens in creating more local public
spaces in their city themselves.
The
first phase of the project will constitute a conference with
accompanying workshops, which will take place at Deutsches
Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt/Main on Thursday 10 and Friday 11
November 2011. Here, architecture studios
from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia,
the Czech Republic and Hungary will gather with
architects from Germany as well as other experts in the
field. A brief introductory lecture will lay out the particularly
problematic areas. Finally, the participating architects will present
a summarized version of their own studio’s sample plans.
In
workshops, to be held on the following day, the initial blueprints
will be developed for possible courses of action, specific to each
area. Our guests from countries in Central and Eastern
Europe will provide introductions to the project areas. Together
with an architect from Germany and possibly additional
local experts, they will form the workshop teams. The resulting plans
will be discussed at a group closing plenary session with architects
and moderating experts.
